Jessica’s Thoughts

{June 7, 2008}   Girls Night Out

With my busy life and realizing that I need to make more time for my friends and myself… we had a girls night out last night!

Sex and the City was a television show that I discovered later in college.   The show came out the summer I graduated from high school (1998), but I didn’t really discover it until 2003/2004.  I had heard so much about it, but I was more into shows like Dawsons Creek and Beverly Hills 90210 – more age appreciate shows at the time for me.  Plus, I didn’t have “premium” cable at the time – I was a poor college student!

However, during my senior year of college (2003/2004), my new neighbors were Sex and the City addicts and already had many of the DVDs.  I got caught up very fast and have loved the show every since!  After the show ended in 2004, I was waiting for something else… I wanted to see the movie after all of the rumors I had heard since 2004!

Now, onto Girls Night Out!

We skipped last week’s opening because I knew that this movie would draw so many people to the movie theatre! I wanted to make sure that we would be able to get good seats for the show!  Plus, I wanted to make sure that all of my friends would be able to sit together!

We all met up at BJ’s Brewery before the movie to have our fair share of Cosmos before the show – the Sex and the City girls’ favorite drink!  I have never been a “girlie drink” kind of girl, but Cosmos are really good! I think that might be another option for me when we go out on the town in the future! After having two Cosmos each at the Happy Hour price (thank goodness), it was on to the movie theatre.

We got to the theatre about 20 minutes before the movie and were thankful that there were still a lot of seats left in the theatre!  I was actually quite surprised how many seats were empty when we walked into the theatre. But, being that it was Sex and the City, I should not have been surprised – most people would show up late!  Luckily the movie started about 20 minutes late… or did it?  Did the theatre manager know that they should start the movie late since so many women would be late to the show?  By the time the movie started (20 minutes late), there was not one empty seat in the theatre!

The majority of those in the audience were women doing the same thing as my group of friends – GIRLS NIGHT OUT.  But, to my surprise, there quite a few men in the audience as well.  I’m not sure if they volunteered to come or were dragged by the wife or girlfriend, but they were there and deep down, I think they enjoyed the movie.

My expectations were not too high of the movie.  The majority of the comments I had heard from others was that the movie did not live up to the show.  Many people told me that this movie should not have been made – the producers of Sex and the City should have kept the show as is and the way they ended it in 2004!  So, I wasn’t expecting much but had to go because it was a continuation of my favorite television show!

I absolutely love the movie!  There were so many parts of the movie that had the theatre rolling in laughter!  There were also a few parts that had tears in the eyes of many of the audience members.  There were predictable things that happened and also some things that I could have never guessed would have happened!  I won’t mention any specifics in this blog as I don’t want to give anything away to those that have not seen the movie yet… You have to see it for yourself!  It was a great continuation of the television series!

At the end of the movie, everyone clapped!  I have rarely been to any movies that people clap, but I think that the majority of people in the audience were clapping!  It was a great movie and a wonderful addition to the wonderful television series.  If you’re a fan of Sex and the City and have not seen this movie yet, I recommend that you see this movie… and see it in the theatre.  Why in the theatre?  When you’re in a room with so many other fans, it’s a great feeling knowing that you are surrounded by others that love the show as much as you… and you can hear it in their laughter, their crying, their reaction to things that happen in the movie.

What a wonderful Girls Night Out!  I need these types of activities in  my life more often and I will definitely make more time in my life to do this – it felt great to get out and have fun last night!
